Revenue
The total money a company earns from its main business before any costs are deducted, also called sales or the top line.
Revenue is the total income a company earns from selling goods or services in its normal operations, before deducting costs. It is the top line of the income statement. Companies with several segments report revenue by segment as well as in total.
On our site, revenue is shown quarterly and on a trailing twelve-month basis, with growth rates. Check whether a company reports net revenue after returns or discounts.
Traders care because revenue growth shows demand. A revenue miss can drive a stock lower even when profits meet forecasts.
Worked example (illustrative numbers, not real data): a company sells 1 million units at 40 dollars, so revenue is 40 million dollars. If it sells 1.1 million units at 42 dollars the next year, revenue is 46.2 million, up 15.5 percent.
