EU approves Wegovy pill as first oral GLP-1 for weight management

The European Commission granted marketing authorisation for the Wegovy pill, once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg, for adults with obesity or with overweight plus at least one weight-related condition. It makes Wegovy the first GLP-1 receptor agonist tablet for weight management across the EU. The same decision approved the 7.2 mg Wegovy injection in a single-dose pen. The approval follows a positive CHMP opinion from May 2026 and gives Novo a head start over Eli Lilly's oral obesity drug in Europe.

• Trials showed about 17% average weight loss versus about 3% on placebo
• Fifth approval for the pill, after the US, UK, UAE and Bahrain
