Shopify and Google launch Universal Commerce Protocol for AI agent checkout

Shopify said it co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with Google, an open standard that lets AI agents connect to merchants and complete purchases. Merchants can sell directly in Google AI Mode and the Gemini app from the Shopify Admin, and Shopify Catalog was opened to brands that do not run their store on Shopify. For a trader, this widens the set of channels that can send orders to the platform, though the release gives no revenue figures.

  • UCP is an open standard co-developed by Shopify and Google, and works with any payment processor, including Shopify Payments
  • Merchants can sell in Google AI Mode and the Gemini app, managed from the Shopify Admin
  • Shopify Catalog is now open to brands that do not use Shopify for their online store
  • Microsoft Copilot Checkout was updated, and ChatGPT is managed through the same Agentic Storefronts setup
  • Shopify says more than 20 retailers and platforms have endorsed UCP
