Open GPU software stack for Instinct; OpenAI and AMD are co-developing Triton and Gluon work for Instinct, and Anthropic will use Claude to accelerate ROCm development.
What it is
AMD's open software platform for GPU computing and AI frameworks, the counterpart to Nvidia's CUDA. ROCm adoption by AI labs and cloud providers is the test of whether Instinct GPUs can be used beyond a few large customers. AMD does not break out ROCm usage in its reported financials.
Why it matters to the stock. Software maturity is the main reason buyers hesitate to switch GPUs. Progress here shows up in which AI labs run production workloads on AMD.

OpenAI says Helios comes online from Q4 2026 and joint kernel work deepens
At the Advancing AI keynote, OpenAI said it expects to bring AMD Helios online through several deployment partners in the second half of 2026, with deployments accelerating through 2027.

AMD announced Ryzen AI 400 and Ryzen AI PRO 400 processors with up to 60 NPU TOPS and up to 12 CPU cores, plus Ryzen AI Max+ chips and the Ryzen AI Halo developer mini-PC.
