Merck & Co., Inc. (known as MSD outside the US and Canada) is a global biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and sells prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. Its growth rests on Keytruda, the oncology immunotherapy whose sales were $31.7 billion in 2025, and on newer launches such as Winrevair, Welireg, Capvaxive and Enflonsia. Keytruda's US patent protection is expected to expire in 2028, so the company is spending heavily on acquisitions and its own pipeline to replace that revenue.
How it makes money
Merck sells branded medicines and vaccines to wholesalers, hospitals, governments and pharmacies, mainly in the US, Europe, China and Asia Pacific, plus animal health products through its Animal Health segment. Revenue is driven by unit volume, price and the pace of new launches. Keytruda alone was about 49 percent of 2025 total sales of $65.0 billion. In 2026 the company has bought Cidara Therapeutics and Terns Pharmaceuticals, and Q2 2026 included a $5.7 billion acquired R&D charge for Terns that pushed the quarter to a GAAP loss.
